Some things are lower, some are more expensive.
First of all, it depends on the countries I was in and perspective. Coming from Western Europe and landing in South East Asia, everything was a lot more affordable. I stayed two weeks in Bali and must have spent about 400€-500€ between accommodation, food, and a couple of visits.
However, when traveling to the US, to Western Europe, or even to Australia, everything is a bit more expensive and you have to be really careful about your budget and, when you're a freelancer, your projected income, especially if you have clients who pay late. It's happened to me a few times and it was a really stressful time.
Generally speaking, when I was traveling, I was spending about the same amount of money on Airbnbs than I would have if I had stayed back home renting an apartment.
Now that I'm living in Dublin, rent is a lot more expensive, more so than London or Paris. But it's cheaper than an apartment in San Francisco, Washington DC or New York.
On the other hand, my girlfriend and I are saving a decent amount of money by cooking at home instead of eating out every single day the way we did while traveling.
