How does USA travel compare with international travel?

I truly love the USA and being an American but there are two big downsides of travel here compared to most of the international destinations I've visited:

1. It is more expensive than a lot of other countries, particularly for lodging; and
2. It is harder to meet fellow solo travelers or just travelers who want to hang out or join up.

When I was traveling without a home-base last year, traveling in the USA was a bit lonely at times whereas traveling in Southeast Asia rarely even though I was very far from home. It was just so easy to connect with other travelers there - whether for a few minutes chat or to walk around with for a day.
