How to not lose friendships back home while traveling long-term as a digital nomad?

I know this sounds terrible but I've lost contact with plenty of friends from back home because,

I've always been gone for long periods of time;
Our outlooks on life have changed so drastically that there are only a few topics left that we still have in common.

As for the ones that I'm still close with, I call them on random occasions pretty much every time they come to mind or when I think of a crazy memory that we shared together.

I love random video calls since those remind me that there are certain people who you do not need to be close to, in terms of geographical location, and that you can instantly pick up conversations right where you left off the last time you both talked.
