It depends on how long you plan to stay in a certain location. If you are only planning to stay for a month or two, most of the times a tourist visa which can be obtained upon arrival at the airport will be sufficient.
However, if you are planning to stay long-term, many digital nomads will schedule visa runs - meaning that they book an outward ticket out of the country and return right after.
For example, if you plan to stay in Thailand for a month, you can get a 1-month tourist visa upon arrival. If you would live to stay longer you can extend once more for 30 days.
However, after that, you will have to leave the country in order to start the process over.
Many people will buy a very affordable return ticket to Malaysia, stamp out of the country and immediately fly back the same day.
Alternatively, if you know beforehand that you would like to stay longer at a certain location, visit the host countries embassy in your home country to check whether longer visas can be issued in advance.
You can check your visa requirements here.
Also, remember to check the foreign service department websites of your home country for more detailed instructions.
